Empowered by Opportunity: The Success Story of Mira Begum

Mira Begum's (40) journey from struggle to success is a powerful testament to the impact of skill development and community support. Through her determination and the help of a dedicated non-profit organization named ‘Save the People Foundation’ – one of the implementing partners of Agami Inc., she transformed her life and became a pillar of inspiration in her community. Her story underscores the importance of providing opportunities and resources to those in need.

Mira's early life was marked by poverty and limited opportunities. However, her life took a significant turn when she learned about the free sewing training programs offered by Save the People Foundation for women in her community, Keraniganj, Dhaka. The program aimed to empower women by providing them with skills to become financially independent through a five-month intensive course. Determined to create a better life for herself and her family, Mira eagerly enrolled in the program in July 2021. She attended the classes diligently, learning everything from basic stitching to intricate embroidery. Her instructors were impressed by her dedication and natural talent.

Upon completing the training, Mira Begum received a sewing machine as a graduation gift from the Save the People Foundation as part of their support initiative. With this tool and her newfound skills, Mira set up a small workspace in a corner of her living room and began taking on small projects from neighbors and friends. Mira's business flourished as her work was meticulous and high-quality, quickly earning her a reputation as a talented seamstress. She diversified her offerings to include custom dresses, school uniforms, and beautifully embroidered sarees. She also started teaching sewing to other women in the same locality, creating a supportive community where they could learn and earn together. She now earns an average of BDT 20,000 (USD 165) per month, supporting her family and the education of her two children. Her younger child attends Agami-supported Dosher School in grade III, while her elder daughter is in grade IX at a nearby secondary institution.

Mira’s transformation from a worried housewife to a successful entrepreneur has become an inspiration to many in her community and beyond.
